Maidan Community Sector, Lviv: Dear friends!

Russia has carried out an act of aggression towards Ukraine. Russian troops have entered Crimea. Thus we take it upon ourselves to inform you about the events in Ukraine. We will provide you with yet another viewpoint regarding this conflict. We will do our best to remain fair and objective.

April 20 – Three people have died and another three have been wounded as a result of an armed attack on a blockhouse in Sloviansk (Donetsk oblast). Ukrainian authorities believe that this provocation can be traced back to Russia. Russia is blaming this attack on members of "Pravyi Sektor", which is a small team uniting Ukrainian right-wing group and which became famous thanks to Russian television. "Pravyi Sektor" has stated that they were not involved in the Sloviansk incident.

April 20 – Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that he is "outraged" by the armed incident that occurred in Sloviansk and is calling for further negotiations with Ukrainian authorities. Russia's Foreign Ministry issued an absurd statement concerning "evidence", which in their opinion "proves" Pravyi Sektor's involvement in Sloviansk shootings. Internet users have mocked this statement heavily – they believe that it is another provocation by Russia.

April 20 – Even if there is a resolution to the current standoff over Crimea and eastern Ukraine, US President Barack Obama will never have a constructive relationship with Russia's President Vladimir Putin. President Obama is focused on isolating Russia by cutting off its economic and political ties to the outside world, limiting its expansionist ambitions and effectively making it a pariah state.

Trading Barbs with Putin

One of Ukraine's richest oligarchs, Igor Kolomoisky, has just taken another rude poke at Russian President Vladimir Putin. And this time the Jewish Ukrainian businessman hasn't just insulted Putin. By invoking Jewish support of Putin's Ukrainian nationalist bogeyman-Stepan Bandera (1909-59) -Kolomoisky, who is president of the European Jewish Union and a leading Jewish philanthropist, has engaged in the ultimate provocation.

Kolomoisky, 51, was one of Ukraine's first oligarchs to side with the post-Yanukovych democratic government. Just after Putin's occupation of Crimea in early March, he agreed to serve as governor of his native Dnipropetrovsk province and publicly called Putin "a schizophrenic of short stature." As if that weren't enough, Kolomoisky then went on to say: "He is completely inadequate. He has completely lost his mind. His messianic drive to recreate the Russian empire of 1913 or the USSR of 1991 could plunge the world into catastrophe."

A day later, Putin paid him back in kind:

For example, Mr. Kolomoisky was appointed Governor of Dnepropetrovsk. This is a unique crook. He even managed to cheat our oligarch Roman Abramovich two or three years ago. Scammed him, as our intellectuals like to say. They signed some deal, Abramovich transferred several billion dollars, while this guy never delivered and pocketed the money. When I asked him [Abramovich]: "Why did you do it?" he said: "I never thought this was possible." I do not know, by the way, if he ever got his money back and if the deal was closed. But this really did happen a couple of years ago. And now this crook is appointed Governor of Dnepropetrovsk. No wonder the people are dissatisfied.

Kolomoisky's latest assault on Putin wasn't a statement, but a performance. He donned the T-shirt depicted here. The shirt abounds with semiotic meanings that need some unpacking.

For starters, black and red are the colors of the Ukrainian nationalist movement that derives its ideological inspiration from the radical branch of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists affiliated with Bandera. The OUN was established in 1929 as a national liberation movement committed to attaining Ukrainian independence. Until its demise in the mid-1950s, it fought the Polish, German, and Soviet authorities by means of propaganda, terrorism, and guerrilla activities. Ideologically and behaviorally, the OUN closely resembled the Algerian National Liberation Front, the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the Jewish Irgun or "Stern Gang," while Bandera was the Ukrainian version of Ahmed Ben Bella, Yasir Arafat, Menachem Begin, or Avraham Stern. Note as well that the image on the T-shirt represents a fusion of the Ukrainian national symbol, the trident, and a menorah.

The most semiotically charged part of the shirt is the term beneath the trident-menorah. If you read it in Russian, it's zhidobandera-or "kike-Bandera." If you read it in Ukrainian, it's zhydobandera-or "Jew-Bandera." Recall that, in the language of Soviet and Putin propaganda, "Bandera" is shorthand for "enemy of the Soviet Union," "enemy of Russia," "fascist," and "anti-Semite." According to this logic, enemies of the USSR/Russia must be fascists and anti-Semites. Hence, the T-shirt's Russian reading boils down to a fusion of "kike" and "anti-Semite." Its Ukrainian reading fuses "Jew" with "anti-Semite." Both readings fuse "Jew" with "enemy."

What, then, are the messages that the T-shirt, and Kolomoisky with it, are conveying?

First, and most obviously, Kolomoisky is claiming that ethnic Ukrainians and Jewish Ukrainians have a common cause in today's Ukraine and that that cause-building a democratic Ukrainian nation and state (or what most Ukrainian nationalists would call nationalism) -is deserving of Jewish support.

Second, Kolomoisky is implicitly accusing Putin of being both anti-Semitic and anti-Ukrainian. The term zhidobandera reverberates with the interwar anti-Semitic notion of zhidokomuna, which fused Jews with Communism. By identifying himself, a Jewish Ukrainian, with a benign version ofzhidobandera, Kolomoisky is by the same token identifying Putin and his apologists with the malignant version, which views Jews as "kikes" and Ukrainians as "anti-Semites" and "fascists."

Third, in the manner of gays and African-Americans, who have appropriated such terms as "fag," "queer," and "nigger," in order to drain them of their offensive content and turn them against homophobes and racists, so, too, Kolomoisky is appropriating the offensive Russian zhid and the pejorative term, Bandera, and stating that, in Ukraine, his homeland, both terms will have the meaning that ethnic Ukrainians and Jewish Ukrainians choose to ascribe to them. In effect, Kolomoisky is taking control of both the Russian and Ukrainian languages and insisting that, not Putin, not Russia, and not Russian propaganda, but he, together with his Ukrainian/Jewish countrymen and women, will decide what words mean in Ukraine.

Finally, Kolomoisky's T-shirt is a plea for Jewish-Ukrainian understanding. Many of Ukraine's Jews, who are generally Russian speakers, find the Ukrainian word for Jew, zhyd (which is identical to the Polish, Czech, and Slovak words for Jew), to be too close to the Russian pejorative, zhid, to be acceptable and therefore prefer yevrey. Many Ukrainians defend their choice of zhyd on the grounds that yevrey came to Ukrainian from Russian. In effect, the pragmatic Kolomoisky is telling both communities to cool it, take a deep breath, transcend their complex past, and work out a solution that addresses current concerns.

La Russie a commis un acte d'agression contre l'Ukraine. Les troupes russes sont entrées en Crimée. Par conséquent, nous voulons vous présenter des informations sur les événements en Ukraine. C'est un point de vue de plus. Nous essayerons d'être objectifs.

Le 20 avril – Dans la nuit du 19 au 20 avril, à la suite d'affrontements armés aux points de contrôle de Slovyansk (région de Donetsk), trois personnes sont tuées et trois autres blessées par balle. Le gouvernement ukrainien voit des traces de provocation russe. La Russie accuse les militants de Pravy Sektor (Secteur Droit), un petit groupe d'extrême droite ukrainien qui devient célèbre grâce aux reportages télévisés russes. Le Secteur Droit nie toute implication dans les opérations à Slovyansk.

Le 20 avril – Le Ministre des Affaires étrangères, Sergueï Lavrov, déclare qu'il est "scandalisé" par les événements à Slovyansk et appelle l'Ukraine à la table des négociations. Les internautes tournent en ridicule la déclaration absurde du Ministère russe des Affaires étrangères concernant les soi-disant preuves qui impliqueraient le Secteur Droit dans les événements de cette nuit – ils disent tous qu'il s'agit d'une nouvelle provocation russe.

Le 20 avril – Même si la crise de la Crimée et du Sud-est de l'Ukraine est résolue et on trouve un moyen de sortir du conflit, les relations entre le Président américain Barack Obama et le Président Vladimir Poutine ne pourront jamais se construire normalement. Obama vise l'isolement de la Russie en coupant ses liens économiques et politiques avec le monde extérieur, ce qui en fera un état paria.

La Russia ha effettuato un atto di aggressione nei confronti dell'Ucraina. Le truppe russe sono entrate nella regione.Per questo abbiamo trovato il coraggio di informarvi di ciò che sta accadendo in Ucraina. E' un'ulteriore punto di vista. Ma cercheremo di essere il più obiettivi possibile.

20 aprile – A seguito dello scontro armato avvenuto la notte del 20 aprile al posto di blocco a Slovians'k, nella regione di Donets'k, sono state uccise tre persone e altre tre persone hanno ricevuto ferite da arma da fuoco. Il governo ucraino crede che anche in questa provocazione si noti un'impronta russa. La Russia incolpa invece i militanti del "Pravyj Sektor" (settore di destra), – un piccolo gruppo di ucraini di destra che è diventato famoso grazie ai media russi. Il "Pravyj Sektor" ha dichiarato che non ha nulla a che fare con gli eventi di Slovians'k.

20 aprile – Il ministro degli Esteri della Federazione Russa Sergei Lavrov ha dichiarato la sua "indignazione" per gli eventi di Slovians'k e invita il governo ucraino al tavolo dei negoziati. Gli utenti di internet hanno ridicolizzato l'assurda dichiarazione del MAE russo in cui vi sono "prove" che vogliono dimostrare il coinvolgimento del "Pravyj Sektor" nella sparatoria di Slovians'k nella notte del 20 aprile; si ritiene che sia un'ennesima provocazione da parte russa.

20 aprile – Anche se venisse risolta la crisi e venisse trovata una via d'uscita dal conflitto sulla Crimea e la parte sud-orientale dell'Ucraina, non vi potranno essere relazioni costruttive tra il presidente americano Barack Obama e il presidente della Russia Vladimir Putin. Obama è orientato all'isolamento della Russia, tagliando i suoi legami economici e politici con il mondo esterno, che la renderà uno stato alienato.

20. april. – Usled oružanog sukoba na blok-postu u Slovjansku (Donjecka oblast) noću 20. aprila troje ljudi je poginulo, još troje zadobilo rane od vatrenog oružja. Ukrajinske vlasti vide u ovoj provokaciji ruski trag. Rusija optužuje militantne učesnike "Desnog sektora" – nevelike grupe ukrajinskih desničara koja je postala poznata zahvaljujući ruskoj televiziji. "Desni sektor" je izjavio da nema veze sa operacijom u Slovjansku.

20. april. – Šef diplomatije Ruske Federacije Sergej Lavrov izjavio je da je ogorčen zbog događaja u Slovjansku i poziva vlasti Ukrajine za sto pregovora. Internet-korisnici ismejali su apsurdnu izjavu ruskog MIP-a o "dokazima" koji, prema njegovom mišljenju, dokazuju umešanost "Desnog sektora" u pucnjavu u Slovjansku noću 20. aprila – oni smatraju ovo narednom ruskom provokacijom.

20. april. – Čak ako bude rešena kriza i pronađen izlaz iz konfrontacije po pitanju Krima i jugo-istočne Ukrajine, predsednik SAD Barak Obama i predsednik RF Vladimir Putin neće nikad imati konstruktivne odnose. Obama je orijentisan na izolaciju Rusije, odsecajući njene ekonomske i političke veze sa spoljašnjim svetom, što će napraviti od nje otpadničku državu.

Rosja dokonała aktu agresji przeciw Ukrainie. Wojska rosyjskie weszło na Krymie. Własnie dlatego mamy odwagę informować o wydarzeniach na Ukrainie. Jest to kolejny punkt widzenia. Staramy się też być obiektywnymi.

20 kwietnia – W wyniku zbrojnej potyczki na punkcie kontrolnym w Słowiańsku (obwód Doniecki), organizowanym przez terrorystów, w nocy z 19go na 20te kwietnia trzy osoby zginęły, trzy inne otrzymały rany postrzałowe. Ukraiński rząd widzi w tej prowokacji ślad rosyjski. Władze rosyjskie oskarżają "bojowników" "Prawego sektora" – niedużej grupki ukraińskich prawicowców, którzy rozbrzmieli w mediach dzięki rosyjskiej telewizji. "Prawy sektor" oświadczył, że nie ma nic wspólnego z operacjami w Słowiańsku.

20 kwietnia – Szef MSZ FR Siergiej Ławrow powiedział, że jest "oburzony" wydarzeniami w Słowiańsku i wzywa władze Ukrainy do stołu negocjacyjnego. Internauci ośmieszyły absurdalne oświadczenie rosyjskiego MSZ o "dowodach" uczestnictwa "Prawego sektora" w strzelaninie w Słowiańsku w nocy na 20 kwietnia – oni uważają to za kolejną rosyjską prowokację.

Rússia realizou um ato de agressão contra a Ucrânia. As tropas russas entraram na Crimeia. Por isso tomamos a coragem de informar-vos sobre os acontecimentos na Ucrânia. Este é um dos pontos de vista. Vamos tentar ser imparciais.

Novidades de 20 de Abril

Como resultado de confronto armado no posto de controle em Sloviansk (região de Donetsk) na noite de 20 de Abril, três pessoas foram matadas e outras três sofreram ferimentos de bala. Autoridades ucranianas estão ligando esta provocação com a Rússia. A Rússia acusa militantes do "Setor de direita" – um pequeno grupo de direita ucraniano que se tornou famoso graças a televisão russa. "Setor de direita" disse que não foi relacionado com a operação em cidade de Sloviansk.

Ministro das Relações Exteriores da Federação Russa, Sergei Lavrov, disse que era "indignado" com os acontecimentos em Sloviansk e chamou ao governo da Ucrânia para as negociações. Usuários da Internet transformaram para chacota a declaração absurda do Ministério russo das Relações Exteriores sobre "evidência" que, em sua opinião, prova o envolvimento do "Setor de direita" no conflito armado em Sloviansk a noite de 20 de Abril – eles consideram isso como mais uma provocação russa.

Mesmo que a crise seja resolvida e uma saída do conflito sobre a Crimeia e do sudeste da Ucrânia encontrada, relações construtivas do presidente dos EUA, Barack Obama com o presidente russo, Vladimir Putin nunca vão acontecer. Obama é concentrado no isolamento da Rússia, cortando suas ligações econômicas e políticas com o mundo exterior, que vai torná-la um estado pária.

Novidades de 19 de Abril

7 navios e embarcações das forças navais das Forças Armadas da Ucrânia, anteriormente baseados na região do lago Donuzlav levantaram a bandeira ucraniana e estabeleceram um curso para o porto de Odessa. Nesta semana, os marinheiros ucranianos já trouxeram seis navios dos portos de Crimeia para cidade de Odessa.

Cerca de 25% da população de sudeste da Ucrânia geralmente suportam a idéia de uma estrutura federal do estado – separatistas pró-russos exigem isso. Idéia do estado unitário descentralizado é suportada por 45,2% da população destes regiões – de acordo com dados de pesquisa realizada pelo Instituto Internacional de Sociologia de Kyiv.

Nos círculos do Serviço Federal de Segurança da Rússia estão pensando sobre a deportação dos tártaros da Crimeia fora da Crimeia. Isso, citando suas próprias fontes da informação dos serviços especiais russos, disse um líder do povo da Tártaros da Crimeia, Mustafa Cemilev. Em 18 de Maio de 1944 pela primeira vez os tártaros da Crimeia foram todos removidos da Crimeia por regime de Stalin. O líder do povo dos Tártaros da Crimeia, deputado daVerkhovna Rada da Ucrânia (Parlamento), Mustafa Cemilev e presidente do Majlis dos Tártaros da Crimeia, Refat Chubarov só depois de um atraso de 1,5 horas em Chongar da região de Kherson poderam entrar no território da República Autônoma da Crimeia.

Para fronteira com a Ucrânia para reforçar unidades militares estacionadas lá, foram enviadas forças adicionais – secretário de imprensa do presidente russo, Dmitry Peskov.

20 апреля – В результате вооруженного столкновения на блок-посту вСлавянске (Донецкая обл.) в ночь на 20 апреля три человека погибли, еще трое получили огнестрельные ранения. Украинская власть видит в этой провокации российский след. Россия обвиняет боевиков из "Правого сектора" – небольшой группы украинских правых, которая стала известной благодаря российскому телевидению. "Правый сектор" заявил, что не имеет отношения к операции в Славянске.

20 апреля – Глава МИД РФ Сергей Лавров заявил, что "возмущен" из-за событий в Славянске и зовет власть Украины за стол переговоров. Пользователи Интернета превратили в посмешище абсурдную заявление российского МИД о "доказательствах", которые по его мнению, доказывают причастность "Правого сектора" к стрельбе в Славянске в ночь на 20 апреля – они считают это очередной российской провокацией.

20 квітня – Внаслідок збройної сутички на блок-посту у Слов"янську (Донецька обл.) в ніч на 20 квітня троє людей загинули, ще троє отримали вогнепальні поранення. Українська влада бачить у цій провокації російський слід. Росія звинувачує бойовиків з "Правого сектору" – невеликої групи українських правих, яка стала відомою завдяки російському телебаченню. "Правий сектор" заявив, що не має відношення до операції у Слов'янську.
